The Dichotomies of Judgments

I have made the coming Kingdom of God a subject of study for a couple of years now. While listening to a podcast, one of the speakers talked about the dichotomy of coming before God for judgment after death, of the whole of mankind being divided to go to the right or left hand of God for reward or punishment. While listening to this conversation, I realized there will not be just a single dichotomy, a division of the whole body into two groups, that mankind does not just come a single time before God for judgment; to be with him in eternity or to be cast away to hell.

The process the scriptures describe is somewhat more complex than that. In fact, the scriptures describe three different dichotomies.

The first of these dichotomies occurs at death. God knows the spirit of the person. They are judged on whether they are are just or unjust. No action taken at death, other than the body goes into the grave and the spirit returns to God in peaceful expectation of reward, or fearful expectation of punishment.

The second dichotomy occurs at the second coming of Jesus Christ. Those who have been judged as just will receive the mercy of his atonement, will hear his voice, their body will be raised from the grave, and they will return with him to receive their reward. Thus justified, they receive either Celestial glory, which grants them rulership in the Kingdom of God, or Terrestrial Glory which grants them citizenship.

The third dichotomy occurs at the end of the millenial reign when the rest of the dead, those who have been judged unjust, will be raised from the grave. Then every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear and they shall receive justice. They receive either the mercy of Telestial glory, for what little good they have done in their lives, yet will bear their sins and suffer eternal torment, or be thrown into Perdition, which is the second death.

The results of these three judgments are that mankind will receive one of the glories best described in Doctrine and Covenants 76:5-7, or to be cast into the lake of fire with death and hell as described in Revelation 20:12-15.

What follows are brief descriptions of the components of the chart above and scriptures related to each section. Study the scriptures in each section to determine for yourself.

Life

This life is a probationary state mankind has been given to be free in order to choose for themselves whether they will do good or do evil. The actions, thoughts and intents of a man's heart are constantly under surveillance by God, and they will be judged according to his works at the judgment bar of God.

Death

Death is th point at which the soul is divided, the body going to the grave and the spirit returning to the God who made it. Death is the breaking point at which all opportunity to repent ceases.

Salvation Judgment

There is a judgment at death wherein the spirit of man returns to God for a sort of arraignment, when the course of your salvation is set, but not yet executed. The dichotomy of this judgment divides the whether one is found just or unjust.

Hell, Grave, Pit

Hell is the state of the body going into the grave and the spirit entering it's state of rest. The dichotomy of hell is whether a one's soul will be at rest awaiting the first resurrection, or at unrest awaiting the second resurrection.

Path of the Just

Paradise

Paradise is a state of rest for those who have died with an expectation of God's mercy at their resurrection. They rest eagerly awaiting the return of Jesus in order to receive their inheritance in the Kingdom of God and a reward for the good works done in their lives.

Firstfruits Resurrection

There has been a firstfruits resurrection. This resurrection occured at Jesus' resurrection and the saints who lived before the resurrection of Jesus were raised.

1st Resurrection

There will be a resurrection which occurs at the return of Jesus. This is the resurrection of the just, the church of the firstborn coming down out of heaven at the last trump.

Mercy Judgment

This is the judgment of the just at the first resurrection. This is the reward judgment for those who receive mercy, their sins being forgiven. The dichotomy of this judgment will decide the reward of those entering the Kingdom of God, whether they will be found faithful, given rulership and celestial glory, or not found faithful, given citizenship and terrestrial glory.

Celestial Glory

Celestial Glory is not a place, per se. It is a set of attributes given to certain of mankind in the first resurrection. They have glory that shines as the sun and are called Sons of God. These attributes enable them dwell in the presence of God have they have exclusive access to the court and throne of God. In addition to enjoying all of the blessings of living in the Kingdom of God, they are additionally given white robes, crowns, are called Kings and Priests and given authority to rule in or from his Kingdom over the earth.

Terrestrial Glory

Terrestrial glory is attributes (light as the moon) which allow men (honorable men, men who died before Christ came, died without law) access to the Kingdom of God, they are given an inheritance and live in the peace, safety, prosperity and holiness of the Kingdom of God under the rulership of those with Celestial glory

Path of the Unjust

Prison

Prison is the state of unrest for the spirits of those who have died with expectation of God's judgment at their resurrection. There was an opportunity to repent after death given to those who died before the flood. The scriptures speak of when Jesus died, he went to the prison house to preach to them so that they might be judged as other man. Those in prison fear the second resurrection and the reward for the evil works done in their lives, of being unable to enter into the Kingdom of God and bearing the torment of their sins in eternity.

2nd Resurrection

This is the resurrection at the last day, when all of mankind, those who have not been resurrected, are raised to immortality to know that he is and they are to be judged of their works.

These are they who

  • Died before the flood and did not accept Christ when he visited the prison in hell
  • Were not resurrected with the firstfruits
  • Were not resurrected at his return
  • Were living at the final day

This is when every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess that he is God. It occurs after the millenial reign of Jesus, when he has subdued all domains under his own and returned them to his father.

Justice Judgment

There will be a judgment of the unjust at the second resurrection. This is the punishment judgment. Because this is the Justice judgment, those resurrected can receive no mercy, yet even they may receive leniency

This is the punishment judgment. The dichotomy of this judgment will divide those who

  • Have not known **Jesus Salvation**
  • Have not rejected the Holy Spirit
  • Have done some little good in their lives
  • Have died in their sins

from those who

  • Have known the power of **Jesus Salvation**
  • Have rejected the Holy Spirit
  • Have died to all righteousness

This judgment will decide whether they

  • Are found in the Book of Life, yet will bear the burden of their sin, being forever unable to enter the Kingdom of God come down out of heaven

from those who

  • Are not found in the Book of Life and will be cast into the pit with Death and Hell

Telestial Glory

Telestial glory is given to those who have died in their sins. Their names are found in the Book of Life, but not in the Lamb's Book of Life. Although they have lived a life of sin, they have done some little good in their lives, so they are not cast into the lake of fire with the devil. They are given glory as the light of the stars, some greater, some lesser. They are described as those who are murders, adulterer and liars who love a lie who consequently cannot enter into the Kingdom of God eternally. These are those who bear the burden of their guilt and shame for eternity.

Perdition

Perdition is for those who have wilfully rebelled against God, having known the commandments of God and would not keep them. They are dead to all good works and having been found wholly evil, are worthy of destruction. They are cast into the pit of fire with death and hell and suffer the second death.
